I covered the opening of the Apple's San Francisco retail store in February, It was Apple's seventh store and its first flagship store, the first to feature a very modern design. The building was a minimalist cube and inside were two floors of stunning decor and a centerpiece glass staircase. We were told Steve Jobs was involved in every aspect of the design, down to choosing the seats in the upstairs theater. It was impressive, but what was more striking to me was its location: Across the street sat a huge Virgin Megastore, 6 floors of music and movies.

Company officials said they are drawing up an "emergency plan" to save the firm and some of its 25 stores, which employ about 1, people. Virgin France, which has not been part of Richard Branson's Virgin empire for more than a decade, has been hit by a collapse in the market for CDs and DVDs as customers shift to digital music and films. The same seismic shift in the market has left HMV in the UK also teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. The UK chain has admitted dire sales mean it is likely to breach its banking covenants later this month. HMV's management, led by its chief executive, Trevor Moore, is currently in talks with lenders. A management spokesman for Virgin France said the company would hold a works council meeting on Monday to officially declare its insolvency and discuss last-ditch measures to avoid closure.
Just heard that Virgin Megastore is going to be closing down by end of January. Their book collection is small, their music section is smaller and their movie section practically non existent. Still, it would be sad to see it go. Thanks EEK!
